WIENS, IDA

MRS. IDA WIENS, of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Elmer Wiens, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at the age of 87 years. Ida is survived by her brothers David (Jeannette) of Medicine Hat and Reinard (Hilda) Kohls of Surrey, B.C. sister Freeda Cosenza of Lafayette, California, brother-in-law Harry Wiens of Penticton, B.C., sister-in-law Alice Spreeman of Olds, AB as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ida was predeceased by her husband Elmer in 2001, an infant son in 1953 and son Brian in 1978. Ida was also predeceased by her parents Christian and Emilia Kohls, four brothers; Robert, John, Herbert and Rueben Kohls and three sisters; Sophie Mann, Stella Muhlbeier and Ella Unrath. Ida was born and raised on the family farm near Golden Prairie, Saskatchewan. She attended Rosenfeld Country School but had to complete high school by correspondence. In 1943 Ida went to Normal School in Regina to obtain her Teacher’s Certificate. She earned her teaching certificate in 1944 and her first job was in a Strasfeld one room school in Saskatchewan. The next year she taught at Observation School, also in Saskatchewan. The following year Ida taught school in the village of Schuler, Alberta where she stayed for several years. In 1948 Ida moved to the Coaldale area and commenced teaching in Coaldale that year. Ida obtained a B. Ed. degree from the U of A through attendance at summer school in Edmonton for a number of years. She continued teaching in Coaldale until her retirement in 1980. Following retirement Ida and Elmer moved to Horizon Village in West Lethbridge. Although they had already traveled extensively they now began taking world tours, one of which lasted over 5 months and took them to every continent in the world. A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Lethbridge, #402, 740 - 4th Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 0N9 or to a charity of one’s choice.
