WICKEND, MARY ALICE

MRS. MARY ALICE WICKEND, beloved wife of the late Gordon Wickend, passed away on Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 at the age of 89 years. Alice was born to Leone and Harry Haney on April 22, 1922 near Cut Bank, Montana, relocating to the Picture Butte area in 1926. She was raised on the family farm east of Picture Butte. At the age of fifteen she attended Olds Agricultural College where she completed her high school education over the next two years. She returned to Lethbridge and entered a training program to become a hairdresser, and upon completion she was employed at Lindred’s Hair Salon on 3rd Avenue South. It was during this time that she met and married Gordon Wickend on October 4th, 1947. They spent over sixty years together prior to Gordon predeceasing her in March of 2008. Alice enjoyed camping, and she and Gordon spent many memorable vacations with the family at Waterton, Penticton, and many other destinations. Gardening was another hobby she enjoyed, and her roses were the envy of the neighborhood. Many of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will cherish the sweaters, jackets, quilts and afghans that were sewn, knit or crocheted with love. Another favorite activity was shopping trips to Great Falls, and the occasional day trips to Shelby and Cut Bank. She also enjoyed the times that she and Gordon spent at Kimberley attending the Accordion Festival and Oktoberfest. Mom was a very competent driver, and even after Dad could no longer drive, she made the trip for many years. Another pastime that Mom enjoyed was playing cards, whether it be crib, bridge or whist, and she continued to attend afternoon card sessions at the Norbridge Seniors Center until early this year. She is survived by two sons, John (Sandra) and Ken, daughter Sherryl (Peter) Kerber, five grandchildren; Stuart (Rynel), Douglas, Heather (Shaun), Kimberly (Mark) and Adam, five great-grandchildren; Jaston, Kealani, Gradyn, Destiny, and Easton; brothers, Leonard Haney and Howard (Georgia) Haney, sister, Kathleen Peta, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 - Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 at 11:00 A.M., with Mr. Lyle Pennington officiating.
