FREDERICK WESTERSON, beloved husband of Pat Westerson, passed away at the St. Michael's Health Centre, Palliative Care on Monday, August 13, 2007 at the age of 72 years. He is the loving father of Conrad (Lori) of Lethbridge and Darrin (Debbie) of Lethbridge and the cherished grandfather of Ryan, Shaun, Shaelin, Dylan and Jolane of Lethbridge. He is also survived by one brother Robert (Lucille) of Rimbey and one sister Reverend Florence McDonald of Calgary. He was predeceased by one sister Jean Oliver of Calgary. Fred was the younger son of Marion and Peter Westerson of Calgary. A born athlete, Fred was a swimmer, diver and gymnast, competing for the Calgary YMCA. He played hockey, baseball, basketball and curled. At age 18 Fred joined the RCMP, retiring as a Staff Sergeant after 25 years. He was stationed in Saskatchewan, the Yukon and spent 21 years in Manitoba. In each posting, Fred lived out his belief that a police officer's best work is done through active involvement in the community - valuing the connections made with the people he served at hockey practice, in the motorcycle club, at the school concert, or cheering on the little leaguers. He enjoyed a second career as a Fire Investigator for the Province of Alberta. Fred was at his best as a Dad and Grandpa and passed on a rich legacy of parenting skills to his sons. With a great zest for life, Fred enjoyed a good laugh, never missed a chance to rib someone, was always on the move or always fixing something. Fred will live in us in a twinkle of an eye, a shared smile and a lightness of heart that makes us better for having known and loved him. Heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Care team and to the staff of the St. Michael's Palliative Care Centre, to the personal Care Workers of Lethbridge Family Services and the RN's and LPN's from Lethbridge Homecare. Fred would not have been able to spend his last 5 weeks at home without your capable care. A Service of Remembrance will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Friday, August 17, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. In memory of Fred, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
