MRS. WIECHERTJE (WIEK) VELDMAN, beloved wife of the late Hendrik Veldman, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, April 16, 2012 at the age of 84 years.
Wiek is survived by her children Ed (Carol), Pete, John (Sylvia), Rob (Heidi), Margaret (Colin) Senneker, Alice (Henry) Prosper, Tim (Mara), Marilyn (Sid) Tams, 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Femmie Slagter, of Calgary, Jean Hendriks, Harm (Henny) Veldman and Klaas (Teuny) Veldman, of Lethbridge. She is predeceased by her parents Pieter and Aaltje Gort, her siblings Antje (Hendrik) Klein, Froukje (Jan) Hoving, Roelie (Jan) Zwanenburg and Jan (Jantje) Gort. Wiek was born January 13, 1928 in Klazienaveen, Drenthe, Holland. The youngest of five children, Wiek finished school and began work sewing men’s dress shirts for a store as well as working as a clerk in stores, until Hendrik pursued her, coming back to Holland to marry her May 30, 1958. Wiek then immigrated and settled on the family farm raising her eight children. She was a faithful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose greatest desire was to see her family grow in their faith. She served her family well and was always hospitable having an open door policy to anyone who wanted to stop by. Wiek loved to sew, knit, crochet and read. Many hours were spent transforming her own old coats into coats for her children, her wedding dress into a baptism dress as well as many other projects, burning the midnight oil to accomplish much in the quiet hours after a busy day taking care of family. We thank God for our Mom and rejoice, she is now in glory with Dad and her Saviour. A Graveside Service will follow at Mountain View Cemetery at 2:00 P.M.
