SZABO, JOSEPH ZUBRIK

MR. JOSEPH (JOE) SZABO, 78, beloved husband of the late Anna Szabo, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on July 22, 2010.

Joe is survived by his son Joe Jr. and his wife Lisa and their two sons Barrett, and Kyle. Joe is also survived by his sister Margaret, his in-laws Irene Upton, Dan and Eva Deringer, Anna Nagy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, both here and in Hungary.

Born on December 17, 1931 in Abod, Hungary to parents Frank and Margaret (Papp), Joe immigrated to Canada in 1957 and took a job in the Coaldale area working the sugar beet fields. From there he moved to Monarch and begun a new career with the L.N.I.D. While there, he also worked part time bartending at the Monarch hotel. It was here that he met the love of his life, Anna. The two hit it off right away and within six months, they we’re engaged, and on April 20, 1963 they were wed.

Soon after Joe and Anna married, they moved to Lethbridge then subsequently bought a farm just outside of town. Soon after the move, Joe started his long career with Canada Packers.

It was also at about this time that Joe was involved with many organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, The Hungarian Culture Club, the Hungarian Old Timers Club, and the I.O.F. During his time with the Knights, he earned the honour of becoming a Fourth Degree Knight and was part of the Honour Guard.

Aside from a rich family life, Joe donated countless hours to doing volunteer work for the above organizations, and also finding time to travel this world with his beloved Anna. He was a man who was always smiling with his eyes, an all round handyman, and of course, the bartender. A man who with be dearly missed by many.

A Funeral Parastas will be held at S.S. Peter and Paul Greek Catholic Church 643-12 “B” Street North, Lethbridge AB., on Monday, July 26, 2010 at 7:00 P.M. Reverend Gary Sedgwick, Celebrant.

A Divine Liturgy will be held at S.S. Peter and Paul Greek Catholic Church 643-12 “B” Street North, Lethbridge AB., on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. Reverend Gary Sedgwick, Celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB., T1J 4K7.
