Mary was born in ?rp?s, Hungary on February 17, 1921 and immigrated to Canada with her sister and brothers in 1930 to reunite with their father in Hardieville. Mary grew up in Hardieville quickly becoming the primary caregiver for her family in light of her older sister's passing shortly after arriving in Canada. Caring for and loving her immediate family, nieces, nephews, and friends was the greatest focus and joy throughout her entire life working tirelessly to support and meet their needs.
Mary participated and successfully excelled in several competitive sports including softball, bowling, curling, and down-hill skiing. She enjoyed working as a manager at Woolworths where she was highly respected by her work colleagues and senior manager. Mary met Richard J. Smith (who immigrated from England) and they were married in 1958 in Lethbridge. Mary lived her entire life in Lethbridge where she raised her three sons.
Mary was very active in the catholic church initially at St. Patrick's and then at St. Basil's once it was built in north Lethbridge. She devoted countless hours as a member and volunteer with the Catholic Women's League (C.W.L.). As of her passing, she was the oldest contributing member with 65 1/2 years of service.
Mary lived her life fully, with courage and determination. She was completely selfless in all of her actions and always gave unconditional love and support. She lived for her family and leaves a legacy of making a difference in so many lives. Her spiritual beliefs created a life of caring, giving, and teaching. She will be sadly missed by those who had the benefit to have known her.
The family would like to thank the Good Samaritans Society Park Meadows Village and Dr. Jansen and the Heart Function Clinic for their valued support and care of Mary.
