Celebration of Life Services in Lethbridge
A gathering that honours how someone lived — not just that they have died
A celebration of life shifts the focus from grief to gratitude. Instead of a formal service, families gather to share stories, music, food, and memories — anything that captures the spirit of the person being remembered. There is no single right way to do it, and that is the point.
At Cornerstone Funeral Home in Lethbridge, we have helped families plan celebrations of every kind: small backyard gatherings, large hall receptions, golf-course tributes, motorcycle send-offs, lake-side scatterings, and quiet evenings in our reception centre. Whatever fits, we will help you make it happen.
How a Celebration of Life Differs
Tone
Less formal. The atmosphere is reflective but lighter — laughter and stories are encouraged. Many families ask guests to wear colour rather than black.
Timing
Flexible. A celebration can be held days, weeks, or months after the death — giving distant family time to travel and the family time to plan something meaningful.
Location
Anywhere. Our chapel and reception centre are popular, but celebrations are often held at a favourite restaurant, community hall, lake, golf course, park, or family home.
Format
Personal. There is no required structure. Some families plan a few short tributes; others use an open-mic format; some build the gathering around the loved one's favourite activity.
Body Present?
Usually not. Most celebrations are held after burial or cremation, with photos, video tributes, or an urn taking the place of the casket.
Religious Content
Optional. Celebrations can include prayers, scripture, and clergy — or none at all. The choice belongs entirely to the family.
Ideas to Personalize a Celebration
Some of the personal touches families have used to make their loved one's celebration truly their own:
- • A photo or video slideshow set to favourite songs
- • A memory table with personal items, awards, photos
- • Open mic for friends and family to share stories
- • Catering featuring their favourite foods or recipes
- • Live music from a favourite musician or band
- • Theme based on a hobby, profession, or passion
- • Charitable donations in lieu of flowers
- • Memorial keepsakes — bookmarks, seed packets, candles
- • A guest book where everyone shares a favourite memory
- • Outdoor scattering or planting ceremony
Common Questions
What is the difference between a celebration of life and a memorial service?
They overlap. A memorial service is any service held without the body present (often after cremation). A celebration of life is a memorial service with a more personal, less traditional tone — focused on the joy of the life rather than the loss.
Can we hold a celebration of life if we already had a traditional funeral?
Absolutely. Many families hold a small private burial or cremation first, then a larger celebration of life weeks or months later, when distant family can attend.
Where can the celebration be held?
Anywhere meaningful to your family. We host many celebrations in our Lethbridge chapel and reception centre, but families have used parks, restaurants, community halls, golf courses, churches, and private homes.
Who leads the celebration?
It can be led by a family member, a close friend, a clergy member, a celebrant, or one of our funeral directors. Many families want a mix — a host to introduce speakers, with several family members and friends sharing memories.
How much does a celebration of life cost?
It varies based on location, catering, audio/visual needs, and any rental items. We provide an itemized estimate up front so you can shape the gathering around what matters most to your family.
