SKAKUM TOWNSEND (nee Baines)

VERNA SKAKUM TOWNSEND, formerly of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC at the age of 86 years. She is survived by her daughter Ruth (Pete) Gronemeyer of Lethbridge and her sons Robert (Heather) Skakum of Lethbridge, Richard Skakum and Raymond Skakum both of Vancouver, BC. She is also survived by her 4 grandchildren, Peter and Aaron Gronemeyer and Lindsey and Michelle Skakum all of Lethbridge, a nephew Max (Lorna) Baines of Lethbridge and a special niece Grace (Tom) Cockburn of Saanichton, BC. Verna was predeceased by her parents, Ethel and Charles Baines, brothers Ralph Baines of Cranbrook, BC and Max Baines Sr. of Lethbridge and nephew Douglas Baines of Vancouver, BC. Mom worked for many years at the front desk and office of the Marquis Hotel in Lethbridge before moving to Victoria where she continued working in the same position for the Sussex Hotel until her retirement. She was an accomplished pianist and violinist and a wiz at crossword puzzles. Mom was a gentle soul who was very private and independent, and was living on her own until her passing. A graveside service will be held at MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY, Lethbridge on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. with Reverend Jason Anderson officiating.
