Mr. ERNEST SHIRE, beloved husband of the late Evelyn Shire, of Lethbridge, passed away at the Edith Cavell Care Centre, on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the age of 90 years. He is survived by his sisters Phyllis Kennedy of Medicine Hat, and Lucille Lemke of Edmonton, brother-in-law Alex Grant of Calgary, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as an extraordinary friend and devoted, caring buddy Henry Wolff of Lethbridge. He was predeceased by his parents George and Annie Shire, sister Lorraine Grant, brother Glen Shire, brothers-in-law Henry Lemke and Jim Kennedy and sister-in-law Jean Shire. Ernest (Ernie) Shire was born May 1, 1921 in Morse, SK to parents George and Annie Shire. He was the eldest son and the brother to Lorraine, Glen, Phyllis and Lucille. As a young man, Ernie left home to work and live in the Drumheller area for a short period of time before moving to Calgary. In Calgary he not only found employment with the C.P.R. at the Ogden yards but also during this time he met his soul mate and life companion, Evelyn Orchard. They were married on June 4, 1949 in Calgary at the Central United Church. In 1954 they relocated to Lethbridge where Ernie continued to work for the railway as a brakeman and later as a conductor until his retirement. He was an outdoorsman who liked to camp, hunt and fish and was an avid sports enthusiast. His garden, yard and greenhouse thrived under his care and attention. Ernest will be missed by many for his sense of humor, very generous nature and capacity to enjoy life to the fullest. A Funeral Service will take place at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Aldeen McKay officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
