ANNELIESE SCHMIEGELT, of Coaldale, beloved wife of the late Herbert Schmiegelt, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the age of 96 years.

She is the loving mother of her son Harald (Linda) and their children Robin (Wade) McKeeman, and Adam; her daughter Dorit (Ken) Rogalsky and their children Trina (Darcy) Welsch, Kevin (Dayna) and Julie (Colin) Gnyp; her son Werner (Janet) and their children Michael (Angela) and Braden. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, one sister, Ingrid Bergmann, two sisters-in-law Irmgard Claassen of Calgary and Inge Schmiegelt of Germany, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Anneliese was predeceased by her parents, Eduard and Margarete Claassen, brother Helmut Claassen and his wife Katie, brother Manfred Claassen, sister Rosemarie Maclean and her husband Duncan, one niece Elenore Claassen.

Anneliese was born on June 16, 1922, in Ladekopp, Germany. She immigrated to Canada through the Mennonite Central Committee with her newly married husband Herbert and the rest of her family in May 1951. They worked hoeing sugar beets in the Coaldale area when they first arrived. Herbert and mom settled in Coaldale where they raised three children.

Mom had a real passion for gardening and cooking and baking. She loved baking and we, as children, loved every little bit of it. Her love of cooking landed her a job at the Coaldale Hospital as a cook where she continued to cook and bake for 17 years. She was also a faithful member of her church and belonged to the Ladies Sunbeam Sewing Circle, Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered at the MCC variety store. After her health started to fail she started to crochet squares for the "Blankets for Canada" making over 100 squares.

Anneliese was a dedicated Oma and treasured her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The family thanks the staff at St. Therese Villa where she was for three months and the staff and Dr. Plotnyk on 5A of the Chinook Regional Hospital for their loving care.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at the COALDALE MENNONITE CHURCH, 2316 - 17 Street, Coaldale, AB on Monday, April 8, 2019 at 2:30 P.M.

In memory of Anneliese, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee: #210, 2946 - 32 Street N.E., Calgary, AB T1Y 6J7.
