Bob was born in Saskatoon, SK to Robert and Jennie Comstock on April 30th, 1927. He received his civil engineering degree from the University of Saskatoon and his Master’s degree from John Hopkins. He met the love of his life, Caroline, while they were both working for the federal government in Regina and they married in September 1950.
Bob’s career took the family to many communities, eventually landing in Calgary as the Branch Manager for Stanley Associates Engineering. In 1968, the family moved to Lethbridge for Bob to oversee the planning and construction of the University of Lethbridge. He stayed on with the University for the remainder of his career as Vice President, Campus Development, retiring in 1990. He often spoke of his work at the U of L as some of the most rewarding and memorable years of his professional career.
Bob was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and served on the board of St. Michael’s Hospital. His faith was an important aspect of his life, and he spent many hours on committees and volunteering with the church. Bob enjoyed golf, curling, bridge, and loved travelling to many locations around the world with Caroline, their siblings, and their good friends. He never lost his passion for the Calgary Flames or his favourite Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Bob was smart, quick-witted, warm and genuine. His family was his greatest joy. He and Caroline would pack their six kids into their station wagon and head out for weekend camping trips, a trek across Canada for the 1967 Montreal Expo, and down to Disneyland. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking them to movies, playing ping pong or cards, always keen to hear everything about their school and extracurricular activities. Always generous with his time and wisdom, Bob was a steady rock for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Caroline (Heck); his children: Linda, Jeanne, Bruce, Nancy (Bob), Brian (Adele), and Blair; grandchildren: Paul, Robin, Lindsay (Frank), James, Christy, Ryan, Ariel (Tyson), Alexandrea (Mark), Allison, Ben (Maria), Sofia; and great-grandchildren: Cambria, Emilia, Kale, Grace, Elizabeth, Mia, Meadow, and Levi. Bob is also survived by sisters, Shirley Baldwin and Dianne (Vic) Palles; and sister-in-law, Margot Comstock. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Jennie Comstock; brother, Bill; father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Flora Heck; brothers-in-law, Gary Baldwin and Henry Heck; sisters-in-law: Ella Heck, Marie Liski, Mary Heck, and Marion Comstock; son-in-law, Ron Wagner; and grandson, Jordan Pisko.
