Rabbit, Larry William

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of LARRY RABBIT our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather on Thursday August 13, 2015 at the Chinook Regional Hospital.

Larry was born April 29, 1942 in Cardston, Alberta to MattsistainaamaahkaBill and TaakiiRita Rabbit. However, Larry was a kiipitapooka who enjoyed being with Grandpa AahsaopiNelson and Grandma IitsisainowaKate.

At a young age Larry attended St.Mary's Residential School. During his high school years, he enjoyed playing football alongside his best friend Leroy Heavy Runner. At the early age of 21 years old, Larry owned his own heard of cattle. On October 15, 1966 Larry married the love of his life, Patsy. Together they built their homestead in Old Agency. In the early 1990s, Larry was the first rancher to own Corriente cattle on the Blood Reserve. He was a full out rancher who enjoyed bailing. Some of the best times were the annual brandings with Grandpa Bill and Grandma Rita and all the food that was shared along with the stories.

Besides farming, Larry and Patsy were school bus owners with the Blood Reserve Bus Co-op. This is where he created lasting friendships with those who rode his bus. During this time, Larry and Patsy operated the Iitoyo'p restaurant where many more friendships were created within the community. Larry was a part of the Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association family, who was a strong supporter of High School Rodeo. In 1981 and 1983 Larry and Patsy travelled to Douglas, Wyoming along with Ed and Marion Heavy Shields where Duke and Rudy qualified for the National High School Rodeo Finals. Larry was like a dad to all the young First Nations cowboys.

Larry was also involved in Senior Pro Rodeo. Of all the Old Timers that he enjoyed rodeo with, Leroy Heavy Runner and Martin Eagle Child are the only two left. Larry recently attended the 2015 Piikani Annual Celebration where he witnessed his son, Duke win the Team Roping event. Larry was a very proud dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. He attended all of his children and grandchildren's graduations. In 2007, he witnessed Wacey win the Memorial Cup with the Vancouver Giants. Larry was very spiritual, he attended church on a regular basis in Standoff, St. Mary's, and Fort Macleod. He made his Cursillo in 1986, his theme song was "Lord Help Me."

Larry had many friends, it was like he had a list of names of who to call. He would start from the top and sometimes he would go through the list again, if no one answered. Larry loved his daughter and sons in-law very much. Dad will be missed by his children; Bill (Mary Jo) Rabbit, Duke (Irma) Rabbit, Marlene (Marvin) Yellow Horn, and kiipitapookaLarissa (Rayan) Najjar. Grandchildren; Sonny, Wacey, Tanita, Otis, Lucyinda, Thomas, Sasha, Great Grandchildren, Christian, Nevada, Martina, Dalane, Zoey, Tacey, Great Great Grandson; Trigger.
