Peter McDermid of Lethbridge, Alberta, beloved husband of 52 years of Sharon McDermid (nee Doughty) passed away on March 19, 2014 of complications arising from cancer at the age of 84 years. In addition to his beloved wife Sharon, Peter is survived by his sons Joseph Robert (Isadora) and Peter James (Sylvie) McDermid, his beloved granddaughter Meghan Monique Sharon McDermid, sister Margaret McNally and brother Edward. He is predeceased by his father Joseph, mother Catherine and brothers Joseph and John.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 15, 1929, Peter was a young evacuee during World War II. Completing his two year mandatory military service in 1950, Peter immigrated to Canada in 1955 and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1956, serving with distinction with the RCMP for 34 years across various posts in Canada, rising to the rank of Inspector prior to his retirement in 1990 in Ottawa. Peter and Sharon then settled in Sharon's hometown of Lethbridge.
Peter's life was distinguished by dedicated service to his community. After retirement, he taught in the Criminal Justice program at Lethbridge Community College for 10 years and served as the President of the Lethbridge RCMP Veterans Association. Peter was also President of the 60 plus Club and served on the Boards of the National Association of Federal Retirees and Fort Whoop-Up. He was also a third-degree Knight of Columbus. A passionate golfer, he will be sorely missed by his partners at Henderson Lake.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 - 12th Avenue South, Lethbridge on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Kevin Tumback, Celebrant.
