OWEN, Michael "Mike" Leonard Spencer
With deep sorrow and humility, the family of Dr. Michael Owen announces his passing on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at the age of 70 years.
Michael will be lovingly remembered and is survived by his "Lady" and best friend, Kimberly Storie-Owen; stepdaughter, Tiana Storie, and his family who reside in England; brothers: Nicholas Owen and his wife Joy and Roderick Owen; nephews: Spencer Owen and his wife Janine and Douglas Owen and great-nephew, Joshua Owen.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, John and Stella Owen.
Always known to his brothers as Mick, he was born in Epping, Essex, England on September 25, 1949. He immigrated to Canada in 1974, where he prided himself on his cab driving skills in the cities of Toronto and Calgary until starting medical school at the University of Calgary in 1975. Michael achieved his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alberta in 1985 and obtained his specialty certification in Psychiatry in 1990.
Michael contributed 27 years of service in Lethbridge and surrounding communities as a consulting Psychiatrist and was appointed Chief of Psychiatry over two different terms. He carried out his duties with diligence, integrity and fearless leadership. His strengths were in his direct approach towards problems, providing clarity and direction while balancing patient and organizational needs.
Michael had a longstanding love affair, as a Superfan with the Rolling Stones, attending over 140 concerts. He enjoyed travelling to Hard Rock Cafes and had a fondness and appreciation for old steam engines and English buses. Michael truly lived out his daily life in a simple fashion. He had an insatiable quest for knowledge and was often referred to as a "living encyclopedia". He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, staff, and patients.
At Michael's request no service will be held.
