MARTHA ELISABETH O'BRIEN, beloved wife of the late Clarence Delman O'Brien, passed away surrounded by family at St. Michael's Health Centre on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the age of 106 years.
Martha is survived by her sons, Colin (Shirley) O'Brien of Calgary and Cal (Barbara) O'Brien of Lethbridge, her special daughter, Lynne O'Brien of Lethbridge, her six grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) O'Brien, Mike O'Brien, Heather (Joe) Howe, Tracey (Dennis) Stroeve, Roxie O'Brien and Nichole (Ramon) Perez as well as eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Clarence Delman O'Brien, her brothers, Matt (Irene) Shatz, Andrew (Phyllis) Shatz, Mark (Nellie) Shatz, George (Vi) Shatz, Tony (Edna) Shatz and Julius Shatz and her sisters, Kate (Ralph) Schlachter, Rose (Cam) Gardiner and Mary (Pete) Ell.
Martha was born on a farm in Bow Island to George & Rose Shatz and she moved to Lethbridge while she was in her late teens. Soon after, she married Delman and they moved to Nanaimo. There, she worked on the shipyards as a welder during World War II. Upon their return to Lethbridge, they resided at the Canada Agricultural Experimental Farm. She worked at establishing Tupperware business in southern Alberta, as well as with Welcome Wagon and Hi Neighbour newcomer welcoming service.
She loved working on crafts, especially ceramics and paper tole. At the age of 99, she won three ribbons at the Calgary Stampede for her paper tole. Martha was a member of the Catholic Women's League for over 75 years and she was an original member of the Assumption Parish.
A Prayer Service will be held at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 - 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Roque Pereira celebrating.
The family would like to thank Martha's House and St. Michael's Health Centre staffs for their years of loving care.
