MARY POSTMAN NIEBOER departed for her eternal home on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the age of 99 years.
Mary was born in Monarch, AB on October 24, 1910 the youngest of 12 children. She spent her formative years in a pioneer family, homesteading in the Monarch-Nobleford area, and also moved for a time with her parents Jan and Janna Postman to a homestead in the Grande Prairie area. During her limited school years she was a star basketball player.
In 1938 she married Bernard Nieboer and settled into the farming community of Iron Springs. There she raised their 4 children and enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens. She will long be remembered as a hospitable farm hostess; a visitor never went away hungry. With husband Bernard she traveled extensively to Europe and Asia, and in 1992 they retired to Garden View Lodge in Lethbridge. After Bernard’s passing and with health restrictions, she moved in 2008 to the Good Samaritan Park Meadows Cottage where she lived at the time of her passing.
Mary is survived by son Willard (Twylla) Nieboer of Jenison, Michigan; daughter Joyce (Dick) Doumeng of St, Thomas, US Virgin Islands; daughter Elvina Mae (John) Van Roon of Lethbridge; daughter-in-law Carol Nieboer of Edmonton, well as 7 grandchildren and 18 great-granchildren. She is also survived by 3 sisters-in-law; Gertrude Postman, Henrietta Nieboer and Hilda Nieboer. Mary was predeceased by son Raynold (Butch) Nieboer in 1986 and her husband Bernard in 2002. She outlived her 8 brothers and 3 sisters.
Mary was the oldest living member of the Nobleford Christian Reformed Church.
We rejoice and give thanks to God for having allowed her to share these many years with us. We are all richer for the many things she taught us, the wisdom she shared with us and the good times she provided for us. M
om was a quiet, easily pleased woman who minded her own business and these were useful attributes in her senior lodge life.
Knowing that her Redeemer lives was Mom’s comfort, and is ours also. Mom’s favourite Bible text was John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.”
She loved to sing and one of her favourite songs was:
“Someday the silver cord will break and I no more as now shall sing But oh the joy when I shall wake within the palace of the King and I shall see Him face to face And tell the story - saved by grace”
A Graveside service will be held at a later date.
