ROBERT MEILI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Edith Cavell Care Centre, at the age of 86 years. Predeceased by wife, Josephine, on June 3, 2011, Robert leaves behind daughter Valerie (Neville) Townsend of Cowichan Bay, son Ed (Christine) Meili of Auckland, NZ, grandsons Robert and Johnathan, step-grandchildren Angela and Mark, all of NZ, sister Bertha Clark of Canmore, brothers John of Calgary, Eric of Canmore and extended family in Canada, the U.S. and Switzerland. Born on February 6, 1925 in Canmore, AB, Robert was the eldest son of John and Anna Meili. Growing up he loved hockey and skiing, later working at the mine and developing a passion for mechanics. After being married in Winnipeg in 1955, the couple returned to Canmore before settling in Lethbridge in 1958 with their two children. Dad was a “jack of all trades” and had a variety of jobs in Alberta and Saskatchewan. He attained a steam engineering ticket later in life, working back in the mountains at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton. All through his life, Robert provided for his family and was both “handy and handsome.” The last two years were difficult as his health failed. Sincere thanks and appreciation to the caring nurses, Home Care providers, ambulance attendants, staff on 5A and in the Cancer Unit at the Chinook Regional Hospital and at Edith Cavell Care Centre. A Private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Tributes in Robert’s name may be made to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, 960-19 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1J 1W5.
