IRENE MAY MCLAUGHLIN (nee Payne), passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the age of 92 years.

Irene is survived by her two sons, Doug (Peggy) of Lethbridge and Ross (Laurel) of Clayton, ON; grandchildren Kevin (Sara), Kelly (Markus), Kristopher (Cathie), Clarke (Shirley), Patrick (Danielle) and Tripp (Stephanie) as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

Irene is also survived by her brother Bob (Anne) of Winnipeg and half brother Ken (Katherine) of Angus, ON as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother Goldie and siblings Grace, Rodina, Gordon, Wally, Winnifred, Gwen and great-grandson Conor.

Irene was born in Winnipeg, on February 1, 1925, growing up in the Sturgeon Creek area. She married the "Sailor of her dreams", Bob, in 1947, who passed away in 1999.

Irene spent the first 88 years of her life in Winnipeg prior to moving to Lethbridge. She worked for many years at Eaton's in Winnipeg and then held several book keeping positions prior to retirement. She enjoyed the years at Star Lake with Bob, hosting family and friends at the cottage. She was an active member of the Eaton Retirement Club, with whom she travelled to Europe and the US, with her sister Winnie as her companion. Irene was also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Elmwood #9 and later General Stewart Branch #4 in Lethbridge. Irene was always a Blue Bombers fan and thought they could do no wrong and the referees were always to blame. Mom liked to play bingo and did so for many years at Chalmers Community Club in Winnipeg.

Irene loved visiting with her family and friends, especially having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to visit. Family and friends were important to Irene for her entire life.

Thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge for their care and attention to Mom in her last few weeks.

A Memorial Reception will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

At her request, a family graveside service will be held in Winnipeg at a future date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be deferred to your local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, Poppy Fund, or the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, 960- 19 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 1W5.

To the members of the McLaughlin Family we send our deepest sympathy

Winnipeg White Ensign Naval Club, July 23, 2017

Dear McLaughlin Family, I was very saddened to hear the news of your mothers passing. Please except my sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. I wanted to share with you a poem I received when my brother Rudy passed away that was written for me by a close friend. "When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears, and hug sorrow to you through the years, but start out bravely with a gallant smile, and for my sake and in my name, live on and do all things the same, feed not on your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour in useful ways, reach out your hand in comfort and cheer and i in turn will comfort you and hold you near, and never, never be afraid to die, for I am waiting for you in the sky, do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not Die." Best Regards, Jack Van Rijn
