SARAH "SADIE" McCARTHY, beloved wife of the late Douglas McCarthy, passed away peacefully at Legacy Lodge in Lethbridge on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at the age of 95 years.
Sadie was born on April 8, 1927 to George & Bridget Tracey and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. She left school at age 14 and worked in a jewelry store, shoe store and candy store. She married Henry Nelson at age 19, but was sadly widowed when Henry died of ALS in 1960.
In 1963, Sadie immigrated to Canada after some encouragement from her sister, Phyllis, who immigrated six years prior.
Sadie loved Lethbridge and embraced her new family and life with much delight. She worked at Eaton's and later at AGT where she retired at age 57.
She met her second husband, Douglas McCarthy, and was married in 1973. They lived in their own home until 2018 when they had to move to assisted living.
Sadie loved her home and was very proud of it, and had a hard time giving it up. She loved music and dancing. She also loved Canada and never regretted immigrating.
Sadie was well cared for at Legacy Lodge and was able to speak for herself until about a week before she died. The staff at the lodge became her second family.
She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Alexander; her four nieces, Pat Skelly, Heather (Terry) Bailey, Beth (Randy) Quan and Donna Edhart (Ron Miller); her niece, Katrina (Douglas) Whittingham of Scotland and nephews George and Jim McIntyre of Scotland. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Don, Dave, Gord, Judy Ann, Laura and their spouses, as well as many step-grandchildren, grandnieces, grandnephews and extended relatives in Canada and Scotland.
She was predeceased by her parents, George & Bridget Tracey; her first husband, Henry Nelson; her second husband, Douglas McCarthy; her two sisters, Margaret Tracey and Ina McIntyre of Scotland; her sister and brother-in-law, Catherine & Jimmy McGinty, and two nephews.
At Sadie's request, there will be no formal funeral service.
A private family gathering will take place at a later date.
