MATIS, RICHARD

Mr. RICHARD MATIS, beloved husband of Helen Matis of Coaldale, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the age of 70 on Friday, December 10 after a lengthy illness. Besides his loving wife, Helen , Richard is survived by his children Ken Matis of Coaldale and Dennis (Sylvia) Matis of Lethbridge and two granddaughters: Melissa and Sierra Matis. He is also survived by one sister Elvira (Albert) Penner and two brothers - Herb (Helga) Matis and Rudy Matis. He was predeceased by his and mother and father, Gertrude and Benjamin, and a brother Eric. He will be greatly missed by his wife and life time partner of fifty-one years, Helen. Richard was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He took every opportunity to let his family around him know that he truly loved them by his words and actions. In his last years at the Coaldale Health Center, he always expressed sincere gratitude for the nursing staff that so faithfully took care of him. Richard left a legacy of memories for his family to remember him by. The many camping and fishing trips to Kananaskis, Beauvais Lake and Beaver Mines are etched in the memories of us all. Early morning boating trips on a still, calm lake are moments in time that his family will fondly remember forever.
He was a carpenter for over forty years, which gave him the privilege to work on many challenging projects. To this day, many of his handy works are still seen throughout the city as silent reminders of his craftsmanship for family and friends to remember him by. With his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and his family’s support, he was able to cope through his illness with dignity and grace. Family and friends may pay their respects at the COALDALE MENNONITE BRETHREN CHURCH, 2114 - 18th Street, Coaldale on Monday December 13, 2010 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. A funeral service be held at the COALDALE MENNONITE BRETHREN CHURCH on Tuesday, December 14 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastors Randy Dueck and Rudy Heidebrecht officiating. Interment to follow at the Coaldale Mennonite Cemetery. In memory of Richard, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, #210 - 2946 - 32 St NE, Calgary, AB T1Y 6J7.
