MARTIN, ANNE

ANNE MARTIN (SEMESOCK) ANNE MARTIN (SEMESOCK), beloved wife of the late Dalton Martin, passed away unexpectedly in the Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, March 7th, 2011 at the age of 82. Anne is survived and sadly missed by her ten children and their families: Ed and Caroline Martin, Faye and John Henderson, Bill Martin and Liz Denham, Allan and Alison Martin, Susan Sheridan, Ray Martin, Dan and Laurie Martin, Sharon and Al Breland, David Martin, and Shelley and Jocelyn Lahaie. She will be missed by her 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Anne is survived by her sisters Jenny Dash and Phyllis Hoshowsky and her brothers Steve and Nick (Lucienne) Semesock. She is predeceased by her parents, John and Katherine, her brother Fred and her sister Mary High. Anne was born in Glen Bain, Saskatchewan in 1929. Growing up speaking Ukrainian, she couldn’t speak English when she first started school, but quickly learned. As education was important to her, she left home to live with her aunt and uncle in Swift Current so she could complete grades 9 - 12. On weekends, she went home to help on the farm. After high school she went on to Moose Jaw Normal School to become a teacher. She met Dalton Martin at a dance in Moose Jaw and shortly after, left Saskatchewan to join a friend in Windsor, working at a Chrysler car plant. Dalton followed her to Windsor and they were married on December 31, 1949.
They returned to Moose Jaw and lived in a house with no running water and apple crates for furniture. Ed and Faye were born there. The family moved to Lethbridge in 1952 and Dalton and Anne never left. They had 8 more children. While Dalton worked hard and frequently away from home, Anne managed the house and the children. It was a difficult life for her but she loved to be surrounded by her family. As the children grew older she worked serving banquets in the evening so that she could “relax”. Dad was mom’s ’everything’! Mom and dad greatly enjoyed their evenings out with friends, playing darts and Bingo. Her many grandchildren will always fondly remember “grandma’s house”, the yellow brick road and her chair. With such a large family, she spoke little, but listened and heard lots. Acts of generosity, kindness, care and love were extended to many people. Her Catholic faith was very important to her and left a legacy for her family. We are most grateful to the staff and her friends at St Therese Villa, her home for the past two years, as well as Dr. Jack Haberman and her doctor, nurses, and staff at the Chinook Regional Hospital for their care and attention to her. Relatives and friends are invited to prayers and tributes at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, corner of 10th Street & 4th Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. with Teresa Grice, officiating. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 917-4th Avenue South, Lethbridge, on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 2:30 P.M. with Reverend John Kohler, Celebrant. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. In memory of Anne, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317-10th Street South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2M7 or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1011-2nd Avenue South, Lethbridge.
