We are deeply sorry to announce the passing in Edith Cavell Care Centre, of CONSTANCE MAY MARTHALLER, on Friday, December 10, 2010, at the age of 105 years, one month and 22 days. Connie is survived by her only son Aubrey Marthaller of Salmon Arm, BC, and granddaughter Lola (Kevin) Lewis of Kelowna, brother Ronald (Dolores) Viney of Lethbridge and many, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband John Henry in 1993, only daughter Marie Dolores in 1989, daughter-in-law Reta in 1986, as well as her brothers Windsor John Viney in infancy, Henry Viney [Jean] of Calgary, and Rev. Fr. Louis Viney OMI, of Vancouver. When Connie’s parents left Cardiff Wales in 1905 they were destined for Lethbridge, Assiniboia District, NWT. By the time they arrived in Lethbridge the Province of Alberta had been declared. Three weeks after their arrival Connie was born, on the old C.E. Parry farm, (located near the intersection of 43rd Street Sound and Highway #4). She was baptized in the old sandstone St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, located just north of DeJourdan’s Photo Studio. Connie was educated in Lethbridge and at Calgary Normal School, and her first teaching position was in Sherburne School at Purple Springs in 1923. She taught at other schools in Southeast Alberta, Lac la Biche, and Separate School District #9 in Lethbridge until the late 1950’s. She was noted as a seamstress, for her sewing, knitting, crocheting, and tatting. Some of her work was retailed through the old Logan Garments Store on 8th Street near 3rd Ave. She worked at the Red Cross Rooms in wartime and was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Women’s League. She was very proud to have received the Province of Alberta Centennial Medal, the Key to the City of Lethbridge, and several blessings scrolls from Popes Pius XII, Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. We wish to thank the caring staff at Edith Cavell Care Centre, including the Recreation Staff, Nurses Wendy, Vivian, Bobbie, Chris and Ben, Aides Lena, Lise, Tammie and Alana, among others. We also wish to recognize long-time friends and frequent visitors - Jim McGinty, Jean Kisilevich, Sharon Link and Lydia Shigemi.
