HELEN "LENA" MARTENS, beloved wife of the late Peter Martens of Coaldale, passed away at the Coaldale Health Centre on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at the age of 101 years.
HELEN "LENA" MARTENS, beloved wife of the late Peter Martens of Coaldale, passed away at the Coaldale Health Centre on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at the age of 101 years.
Lena was born on July 8, 1919 to Jacob & Maria Friesen in Omsk, Siberia. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1926 when she was six years old. After living in Manitoba, the Friesens moved to Coaldale. It was there that Lena met the love of her life—Peter Martens. The couple stayed happily married for 74 incredible years until Peter's passing in 2017.
Together, they raised three children: Bill (Jean) Martens, Carol (Dave) Dancoisne and Candace (Fred) Nicoll, and had nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mom & Dad loved to travel in their retirement years until the decline of Mom's health. She loved babies, especially all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and prayed for her children every single day.
A private graveside service will take place in the Coaldale Mennonite Cemetery, and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
