Margaret Powell
1950 – 2025
Margaret was born in Edmonton, Alberta on February 10th, 1950. She grew up in Saskatoon and received her first degree at the University of Saskatchewan in the same city. She came into my life in 1983 while pursuing a teacher’s degree and a short time later, we strolled through the next 42 years holding hands and laughing.

She was brilliant academically. I have never met anyone that was funnier or kinder. A champion of folks that needed such a thing — she spent her teaching career looking after special kids in L.C.I., Wilson Junior High and later on — Nicholas Sheran Elementary School.
A few years after she retired, Margaret decided to become a substitute teacher because a lot of her friends were still in the system. Once again, she spent time with Special Education, Harbour House, The Hospital Program etc. Her very last day teaching was at the Hospital in February. As a teacher, she was outstanding. And loved. And highly respected.
My beautiful lady was a prodigious reader and often read three books or more a week. She belonged to book clubs with colleagues from yesteryear and nothing gave her more pleasure than to meet her wonderful lady friends and discuss the latest book or maybe even the state of the world?
Margaret was always ready for an adventure and experienced such things as the Amazon rain forest waiting in pitch darkness while a chap whistled to try and bring a tapir down to the river, or standing tall when an enraged water buffalo tried to kill us both in Northern Uruguay, or the herd of elephants thundering down the hill towards us in the Chete Concession of Zimbabwe. Countless other adventures and experiences. It made our lives so rich.
Margaret leaves behind her son Alex (Liz), step son Shane, grandchildren Jimena (Meg), Sydney, Siobhan, and Desmond. Five brothers and sisters starting with Carla (Nels deceased), Cathy (Ron), John (Carol), Jane (Kevin) and Hugh (Helen). Her little mini schnauzer Augie.
Every day I told her how beautiful she was, how funny she was, how smart she was. And we always held hands and she leaves her husband Richard.
A Celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at the CANADIAN POLISH ASSOCIATION OF LETHBRIDGE, 745 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, June 7, 2025 from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Richard, I am so sorry for your loss. Although she and I never met I know she often asked about "the big dog" Neeko. That in itself leaves her with a special place in my heart. I will definitely try to be at her celebration of life. I do hope you and Augie are doing ok. If I can help in anyway please let me know. Lynda (Neeko & Oddis)

Mrs. Powell was a favourite when I attended Wilson middle school almost three decades ago, and I've occasionally thought about her (and her husband - another favorite) on and off over the years and hoping they were well and living a beautiful life. She was a genuine, warm, caring and compassionate woman. A genuine role model. My condolences to Mr. Powell and the rest of her family.

I worked with Margaret at Nicholas Sheran 15 years ago. She was a delight, and so graciously shared her dear students with me. She was a passionate educator, but always spoke about her family and the deep love she had for them and you always knew they were her truest joy! I was a fairly new teacher with a passion for learning support and Margaret shared her deep knowledge freely with me, always sharing resources and offering advice. I have loved getting to keep in touch with her when she subbed at Lakie. Her loss with be felt deeply and I hope your family takes comfort in her great love for you and the impact that she has had on our community.
