LOUISE GOERTZEN

It is with sadness but great peace that we bid our dear Wife, Mother, Grandmother & Great Grandmother farewell until we meet again. Louise Goertzen passed away peacefully in Lethbridge on May 20, 2009, at the age of 83. On September 7, 1925, Louise Elizabeth Thiessen was born in Rush Lake, SK to Jacob and Anna Thiessen, the eldest of four girls. On July 22, 1945, she married the love of her life, Dave Goertzen. As newlyweds they settled in Coaldale to raise their family and eventually retiring in Lethbridge. Amongst raising five children she managed to fit in her annual beet hoeing and some custom house painting. Louise had an outgoing personality to all friends and strangers with always having a minute for a chat and a smile no one could forget. Family gatherings were very important to her. Sometimes the noise from conversation and laughter was almost unbearable but she loved every minute of it. The family gathering this past Mother’s Day was very special to her. Louise was active in the Lethbridge Mennonite Church, Lethbridge Seniors Centre, Lethbridge Soup Kitchen and the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Variety and Global Crafts Stores. Her hobbies included ceramics and knitting each grandchild, “a special afghan”. Louise is survived by her husband, Dave, of 63 years. Children, Sharon (Ken) Sloane, Jerry (Brenda) Goertzen, Nola (Bob) Handsaeme, Danny (Leona Watson) Goertzen and Wendy (Doug) Smith. Grandchildren, Tim (Jodi), Trevor, and Terry (Tessa) Neufeld and their father, Herman Neufeld; Jessie (Dan Manning) and Lauren (Eric Pelzmann) Goertzen; Greg (Lana) and Brad (Lori Clark) Handsaeme; David and Daryl (Pam) Goertzen and their mother, Christine Goertzen; Riley, Janay and Lacey Smith. Great Grandchildren, Teagan and Rylan Neufeld; Alley and Caylee Handsaeme and Taylor and Trystyn Neufeld. Louise was predeceased by her only brother Jacob at infancy, her parents Jacob and Anna Thiessen and sisters Alma, Eva and Olga.
