It is with great sadness that the family of MRS. LILLIAN JANE RUTHERFORD (nee Bowman) announce her peaceful passing at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at the age of 84 years. Words cannot express the profound sadness that her passing leaves in the lives of all who hold the honour of knowing her. Lillian was born in Star City, Saskatchewan in 1923 in her grandmothers’ home. With her father working on the railroad, she grew up in Souix Lookout, Nelville, Radville and Kindersley. As a young woman Lillian received her nurses training at Port Arthur General. She returned home to work in the Kindersley Hospital. She married Warren Rutherford of Kindersley in 1946. Lillian and Warren had one daughter Ella-Mae, fondly known as Elly. She described her daughter as the joy of her life and the one true reason for being. Together Lillian and Elly travelled many places with Lillian’s career, including Consort, Oyen, Hanna, Cereal, Grande Prairie, Elmworth, Edson, Calgary and her final home in Lethbridge. In their travels Lillian and Elly had many special friends that they think of as family. She enjoyed her later years living in Lethbridge, visiting the farm and watching their beloved racehorses run. She spent her working life dedicated to the health care profession as Director of Nursing for many health units including Grande Prairie, Edson, Mountview, Foothills and Banff as well as Home Care Coordinator. Writing the directives then implementing the first Home Care Program in Alberta, she has contributed greatly to Health Care in our Province and her colleagues have always held her in the highest regard. Compassion and caring came easy to Lillian and she offered unconditional love and acceptance to everyone. She showed her co-workers, friends and family encouragement and was never critical. Her quiet strength was admired by all who knew her. Her love and commitment to her family was apparent. Lillian offered her home and caring to her aging parents Fred and Mary Bowman and her sister Dorothy who all predeceased her. She leaves to mourn her daughter Elly (Garry), siblings Shirley (Pete - deceased) Regan, Jim (Bev) Bowman, Ruth (Wes) Karg and their families, grandchildren Connie Beninger, Sherry (Russel) Laackmann and great grandchildren Tyler, Kylie, Maxwell and Zane. A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Andrew Horne officiating. While family appreciate the offer of flowers, we would respectfully request donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317-10th Street South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2M7 or to the University of Lethbridge, Nursing Program, 4401 University Drive, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1K 3M4.
