MR. WILLIAM “BILL” ERNEST LANHAM, beloved husband of 64 years to Mrs. Stephanie Louise Lanham of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the age of 88 years. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his children Anita Louise Lanham of Lethbridge and Monica Lynn Lanham of Lethbridge, grandchildren Kayla Louise Lanham and Kelsey Lynn Lanham as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and Belgium. He was predeceased by his sister and parents. Dad was born in Calgary, Alberta on January 26, 1922 to Annie and Ernest Lanham. He grew up in Calgary in the Hillhurst Community along with his sister Nancy and attended Hillhurst School and Western Canada High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and served in Western Europe and England for four years during the Battle of Britain, D-Day Invasion and the Liberation of Europe. On December 24, 1945 in Belgium, he wed his loving and devoted wife Stephanie and shortly after, returned to Calgary, Alberta to start their new life together. Together, they shared in raising two lovely daughters, Anita and Monica and were later blessed with two incredible granddaughters, Kayla and Kelsey. Dad worked for Canadian Western Natural Gas Company for 34 years. He began in Calgary in 1945 during which time he attended SAIT and received his power engineering creditation and his plumbing and steamfitting credentials, he also took a number of courses in employee supervision and was transferred to Lethbridge in 1969 where he worked as the Lethbridge and District Supervisor of towns. After his retirement he attended the Lethbridge Community College and took a number of Law Enforcement courses which he needed to work at the Lethbridge Courthouse as a bailiff, court orderly and later with the Red Deer, Court of Queens Bench as the Deputy Sheriff. He was so very proud of his accomplishments. Dad also dutifully served on the Lethbridge Crimestoppers, Lethbridge Library Board, Lethbridge Lifeline, Lethbridge Assessment Board, Lethbridge Downtown Lions and Masons. He was a long standing member of the General Stewart Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a truly proud and dedicated husband, father and grandfather who will always be remembered for his love of his home, family and pets, his courage in life, his generosity, his love of cooking and baking, his love of dogs and all living creatures and his sense of duty to his friends and family. Dad, we cannot put into words our sense of loss, but we know you are in a better place and little Sassy is keeping your chair by the window warm and safe. A Funeral Service will be held at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 - 11 Street South, Lethbridge on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Canon Allan McCuaig officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
