KORCHINSKI, JAROSLAW (JERRY)

Born on August 31, 1925 in Rizdviany, Ukraine, JAROSLAW KORCHINSKI was a husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle, son of the Ukraine and proud Canadian. His mother and father were Anna and Nick, simple farmers from the Transcarpathian Mountain region. In 1949, after WW II, Jaroslaw (Jerry) came to Canada, docking in Halifax. He made his way across this vast country not knowing English, but he was versed in many European languages. His journey took him to Pearce, AB where a Polish gentleman was able to direct him to High Prairie, where he was reunited with his father, Nick. Jerry, Russel, Carson, Slawko (a man of many names) began working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1949 as a maintenance-of-way section foreman. In 1954, he met Maria Braun and they were married on August 14. They were the first couple to be married at the Lethbridge Greek Catholic Ukrainian Church. The church was still waiting for pews to be put in. They moved to High River and together they had four children, Jerry, Nick, Anna, and Kathy. Jaroslaw and his family moved to Warner in 1970. He retired in 1985. They remained in Warner until 1990 when they moved to Lethbridge. Jaroslaw was a man of many talents and hobbies. He could play the accordion, guitar, harmonica, and drums. He was the first one on the dance floor for a polka and would venture onto both water and ice in order to “catch the big one.” An avid outdoorsman, he hunted and camped and cared for a garden that was the size of a house lot. He continued with gardening, his passion, until this very spring. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Leon (Ukraine), and his in-laws Heinrich and Anna Braun. He is survived by his wife Maria, of over 56 years, and his children, Jerry (Caroline Nicholson), Nick (Sherry), Anna, and Kathy (George Van Dellen). He is also survived by his grandchildren Tyler, Krystal (Balazs Molnar), Heather (Paul Crapo), Jennifer (David Pike), and Devon, and his great-grandchildren Landon, Naomi, Wyatt and Ivan. A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Mr. Cliff Bogdan officiating. In Memory of Jaroslaw, we ask that you do not send flowers. Please continue his passion in life by planting and caring for a flower or a tree.
