JOHN SOROCHAN

JOHN SOROCHAN March 19, 1929 - July 22, 2012 John was born in Smokey Lake AB and raised in Edmonton. Together with his wife Jean (Gartly), they raised seven children in the Transcona area of Winnipeg. At an early age John followed his father Peter into the sewer and water business. He began his career working for Borger Brothers, followed by a partnership with Bergman Foundations of Winnipeg. In 1978 he moved his family to Lethbridge to establish Sorochan Enterprises Ltd. John partnered with several of his children and they worked closely in the business until his retirement in 1991.

John enjoyed golfing, cards, arguing politics (long and often loudly) and watching the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Edmonton Oilers. He was an excellent cook and loved to spend time in his garden. John’s most favorite times were being with his family when we could all get together for special occasions. John is survived by Jean, his wife of 58 years; son Glenn (Heather) and children: Christie of Vancouver, Cayley (Dr. Marc Leger) of Montreal, Ryan of Montreal, Jamie of Vancouver; son Don (Dilene) and David of Lethbridge; son Dale of Lethbridge, daughter Myra and children, Kara and Riki Valgardson of Lethbridge; son Dan (Lisa Mitchell) of Lethbridge; son James of Lethbridge; daughter Jannette Schoen (Russ) and children Stephanie and Anthony of Warner. John also leaves behind sisters Mary Smithaniuk and Olga Finley of Edmonton. He was predeceased by his brother Bill, sister Betty Peters, and brothers in law Clark Peters, John Smithaniuk and Jim and George Gartly. The family is very appreciative of the excellent care afforded John at St. Therese Villa in Lethbridge the last two years of his life and from the Calgary Foothills in his final days. A Celebration of John’s life will be held at the RIVER OF LIFE COMMUNITY CHURCH, 2820 - 18th Avenue North, on Tuesday July 31st at 2:00pm with Reverend Dr. William Calderwood officiating. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
