JIM TAYLOR

TAYLOR MR. W. J. “JIM” (BUCK) TAYLOR, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Helen Taylor, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Legacy Lodge on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the age of 92 years. He is survived by his children; Ken (Natalka) Taylor of Lethbridge, Duane (Jo-Anne) Taylor of Lethbridge, Robert (Gay) Taylor of Ponoka, Marianne (Derrick) Hawes of Calgary and Donna Taylor of Calgary, 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother John (Margaret) Taylor and sisters Katherine (Percy) Rossiter and Mary (Reg) Forster. Jim was born and educated in Lethbridge where he spent his youth involved in local sports. He moved to Red Deer to work for Dench Trucking before WWII. Jim served in England, France (D-Day +4), Holland and Belgium with the 65th Tank Transport Co. RCASC. When Jim, who had the childhood nickname of “Buck”, returned to Lethbridge, he married his sweetheart Helen George and began raising a family. Jim worked for Crystal Dairy, later known as Union Milk and Alpha Dairies. As a sales representative, Jim travelled throughout southern Alberta and the Crowsnest Pass. Throughout his life, Jim was active in the community. He was a member of several organizations, including the Optimist Club, Elks, Miner’s Library, ACT and Junior Chamber of Commerce. Jim sat on several church and school (St. Basil’s) committees. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 53 years, both in Lethbridge and Calgary. Hunting and fishing were great loves of Jim’s life, but he was most passionate about baseball. Jim coached and managed the first junior baseball teams in Lethbridge, includuing the Miners and Lethbridge Elks. They played in the old Adams Baseball Park. In 1971, Jim’s employer, Silverwood Dairy, transferred him to Calgary. Jim and Helen, daughters Marianne and Donna and Helen’s sister Mary Papp, made the transition to their new city. Jim continued to be involved in the Calgary Community until his retirement. Jim was an avid golfer who cut a dashing and colourful figure both on and off the course. He was a member of Inglewood G&CC in Calgary for several years. Jim returned to Lethbridge in July 2009 and resided in Pemmican Lodge, then Lethbridge Extendicare and recently at Legacy Lodge. His great sense of humour will be missed by all those who he knew and loved. A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Major Glen Habkirk officiating. A family interment will be held at the Rockyview Memorial Gardens cemetery at a later date.
