JOHN (JACK) EDWIN LAWSON, beloved and loving husband of Patricia for 51 years and proud and loving father of Sharon, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital following a massive stroke on July 5, 2009 at the age of 75 years. John was born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba in 1933. After graduating from Shoal Lake Collegiate, he attended both the University of Manitoba and the University of Minnesota. As a young man he participated in many sports, his favorites being curling, baseball, and hockey. He also enjoyed bird hunting. In 1957 he moved to the Experimental Farm at Onefour, near Manyberries, Alberta where he supervised research projects on beef cattle breeding. In 1958 he married Patricia Campbell, also from Shoal Lake. In 1964 they moved to Lethbridge, where John continued his research on selection and crossbreeding in beef cattle at the Lethbridge Research Station. John retired in 1988 after 31 years as a researcher, the last four years also as Head of the Livestock Sciences Section. For another six years he was employed as Executive Manager of the Canada/Alberta Livestock Research Trust. Later he spent two years writing a book on ‘75 Years of Research 1927-2002 Research Substation, Onefour’. John is survived by his wife Patricia, daughter Sharon, father-in-law George Campbell, sisters-in-law Shirley Lawson and Audrey Campbell, nieces Margaret Gagnon and Isobel Lawson, nephews Jim Lawson and Neil DeMaere and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Delmar and Lillian, his brother Arnold, and his mother-in-law Anne Campbell. In accordance with John’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation will be followed by a family grave side service at a later date.
