J.C. MAURICE L'ARRIVEE

J.C. MAURICE L’ARRIVÉE (B.S.A., M.Sc. Ph.D.), passed away on Friday, September 18, 2009, at the age of 86 years. He was born on June 18, 1923 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. His parents were E. Bernier L’Arrivée and Elodie Guilbert and he was the first born of ten children. He was predeceased by two brothers: Jean and Rene, and a sister, Marie Kehler.

In August 1950, he married Catherine Cassidy of Winnipeg. They raised six children: Marguerite Salsberry of Airdrie, AB.; Patricia Clarke of Lethbridge, AB.; Ann-Marie L’Arrivée (Mark Terrell) of Calgary, AB.; Paul (Lesley) L’Arrivée of Pakenham, ON.; Denis L’Arrivée of Rockland, ON.; and Suzanne Larsen of Manotick, ON. He has six grandchildren: Aaron Halstead, Moyra Terrell, Shannon Larsen, Christopher L’Arrivée, Matthew L’Arrivée, and Kane Keeling Larsen.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Catherine, four sisters and two brothers (and their spouses): Gabriel (Cecile) L’Arrivée of La Broquerie, MB.; Gail Hiebert of Kansas City, MO.; Rita (John) Peters of Warsaw, MO.; Lucille (John) Caudill of Valley, WA.; Therese (Roger) Gobeil of Kamloops, B.C.; Jon (Lyn) L’Arrivée of Mount Vernon, WA.; one sister-in-law, Andree L’Arrivée, of Winnipeg, MB.; one brother-in-law, Ed Kehler of Duncan, B.C.; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Maurice received his early education in St. Boniface, MB. He served 4 ½ years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. After WW2, he attended the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, MB., where he received his B.S.A. and M.Sc. degrees in Agriculture, specializing in Horticulture and Entomology. He then transferred to the Iowa State College in Ames, IA., where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Apiculture. He was subsequently employed as a Research Scientist in 1954 at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Brandon, MB. In 1965, he was transferred to the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, ON., where he later accepted the position as Head, Editorial Unit, Information Division of Agriculture Canada. Finally in 1985, he was transferred to the Research Station in Lethbridge, AB. to be its Information Officer. Dr. L’Arrivée retired in Lethbridge in 1987 and lived in Lethbridge until his death.

Maurice L’Arrivée was a Lay Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of The Assumption Catholic Church, and a member of Our Lady of Peace Council #5826 of the Knights of Columbus. He has served as a District Deputy of the Knight’s of Columbus for 2 years, and was a member of the Fourth Degree. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Lethbridge, AB. Maurice has volunteered in a number of parochial and civic organizations, such as the Federal Superannuates National Association and the Catholic Charities Clothes Bank as its treasurer.

Vigil Prayers will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB., on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at 7:00 P.M.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 - 12th Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB. on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Tim Boyle as celebrant. Cremation by Cornerstone Funeral Home.

After the Funeral Mass a Veterans Tribute will be held at the church
