IRENE FROUWS

‘Trust in the Lord with all Thy heart and lean not unto Thy own understanding. In all Thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct Thy paths.’ Proverbs 3:5-6 IRENE FROUWS (nee Nagy), beloved wife of John Frouws, passed away peacefully at the St. Michael’s Health Centre on Wednesday, February 20, 2008. Irene was born at home in Diamond City on August 17, 1916. After completing a hair dressing course, Irene had a wide range of customers, including the ‘madams’ of Lethbridge’s red light district. She met Johnny when she was a teenager and they married in 1943 while he was on a military leave. During the war years, she worked in food services for TCA Airlines. After WWII, she and Johnny bought a veterans home on Dieppe Blvd and they proceeded to raise a family. Irene was a very generous, loving and resourceful person who always made sure that her family ate well and dressed nicely. She was also an avid gardener. Together, she and Johnny won Canada’s best veterans vegetable and flower garden trophy five consecutive years. Over the years they climbed every coulee east of the Oldman River from the High Level Bridge to Alexander Park, picking luscious Saskatoon berries. Because she loved being around young children, Irene spent many enjoyable and memorable hours babysitting. For several years she and Johnny donated generously to various local and overseas organizations. Many hours were spent being a volunteer Sunday school teacher at Southminster United Church and a volunteer hair stylist at the Edith Cavell Care Centre. Besides her loving husband of 64 years, Irene is survived by her daughters Carol and Diane and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Steve and Verona Nagy and her siblings; Sandy, Steve, Mary, Lewis and Mitch. A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. with Major Glen Habkirk officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In memory of Irene, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
