HUMMEL, GEORGE ALFRED

HUMMEL, GEORGE ALFRED February 25, 1927 - April 12, 2010 Beloved husband of Alice, adored father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 after a long illness.

George was born and raised in Champion, Alberta, where he farmed from the age of 17 until retirement in his mid-70s. He loved agriculture, aviation, big band music, southern Alberta and Canada’s north country, but most of all loved his family.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice (Anderson) of the Anderson Sisters Orchestra; six children, Bernie (Janet) Hummel, Eleanor (Lyle) Smith, Ruth Hummel, Grant (Wendy) Hummel, Grace (Gord) MacLeod, and Joan (Jeff) Penwell; six grandchildren, Jerad (Kyla) Smith, Warren (Jen) Smith, Connie Hummel, Lauren (Matt) Ostridge, Colin MacLeod and Stuart MacLeod; and four great grandchildren, Hannah, Garnett, Ainsley and Landon George. He is also survived by siblings Dorothy Degenstein, Racille (George) Ellis, and Ramon (Jean) Hummel.

George will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humour, attempts to play the violin, coaching of Team George in the Lethbridge Parkinson’s SuperWalk, and for his countless hours of community service, especially for the Village of Champion and as a charter member of the Champion Lions Club. His philosophy was to work hard, laugh often, and always help those less fortunate.

A private service for family will be held to celebrate George’s life.

His family extends sincere appreciation to Dr. Mona Cassis and other health care professionals, including those at St. Therese Villa, for their care and support.

Donations may be made in George’s memory, directly to the Parkinson’s Society of Southern Alberta (1254 - 3 Avenue S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0J9, telephone 403-317-7710).
