Helen Mary Kovacs passed away suddenly in her home on May 6 2009, 4 days after her 82nd birthday. She will be dearly missed by her children Greg, Kim, Nadine, and her grandchildren Kelan and Jory. Helen leaves her sister-in-law Anna Blackwood (Art), her brother-in-law John Kovacs (Colleen), her cousins Alice Fransden (Vern), Cliff Firth (Arlene), several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Helen is predeceased by her husband Ernie, her mother Katherine Szarka (Bert), and her aunt Elizabeth Firth (Alwyn). Helen was born in Calgary, Alberta on May 2, 1927. Her early life was very mobile attending 10 different schools and living at 30 different addresses in Calgary, Bow Island, Glenwood, and Medicine Hat before settling in Lethbridge in 1945. She was married to Ernie who passed away in 1988 after 35 years of marriage. In addition to raising her 3 children, she worked for the City of Lethbridge in the City Manager’s Office and the Social Welfare Department, Williams Tanner and Bell, Canadian Western Natural Gas Company, and Lethbridge Herald as secretary for the publisher, Cleo Mowers. Helen was very generous with her time serving faithfully in numerous groups and committees in her church and in the community. She was a long standing member of the Lethbridge Historical Society where she served in the executive as Historian since May 1997. She worked diligently to ensure that the history of Lethbridge was preserved through the development of historical scrapbooks containing newspaper articles, photos and other historically significant paraphernalia. During her later years she endured numerous health challenges, but remained very active and continued to nuture her eclectic musical tastes by attending the many symphonies, concerts and performances offered in southern Alberta. The family would like to thank the coffee club ladies who provided continual support and gave her countless hours of joy and laughter. We would also like to especially thank Laura, Stenella, and the staff from Greystoke Homes for the loving assistance they provided on a daily basis. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the church prior to the funeral service from 10:00 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. The Funeral Service will be held at MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329- 15 Avenue South, Lethbridge on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Cathy Coates officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Helen to the Lethbridge Historical Society (PO Box 974, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 4A2).
