HELEN HAZUDA, the beloved wife of the late George Hazuda, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at the age of 87 years.
She accomplished much in her life, including raising four children. She was a nursing assistant for more than 32 years (Family Medical Centre & Haig Clinic) and was also employed at the former St. Michael's Hospital as a switchboard operator.
Helen was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her daughters, Barb (Charles) LeClair, Laurel (Doug) Scroggie, Patti (Dominic) Santangelo, all of Lethbridge, son, Douglas (Gayle) Hazuda of Coaldale; grandchildren (Barb) Kim, Jennifer, and Kelli; (Laurel) Stephanie, Daniel; (Patti) Tammy, Jamie; (Douglas) Chrystal, Michael, Curtis, Shannon, as well as many great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Irene Hazuda of Lethbridge and extended relatives in Lethbridge, Calgary and in Slovakia; and a host of friends in Lethbridge and area. She was predeceased by her husband George in October of 2010, parents, George & Anna Maty, one infant brother in Slovakia and a brother, George, who died at the age of two, in Taber, one brother Mike (Mary) Maty, brother-in-law Mike Hazuda, her beloved sister-in-law Mary (Fred) Hranac, and by two infant grandsons, as well as other family members.
Helen was born in Taber on July 1, 1935. She loved life and the farm she was raised on. At a tender age, she worked in the beet fields chopping off leaves with a beet knife, stoking grain by hand (a long-forgotten way of work). In 1945 the family moved to Picture Butte. She married George Hazuda in 1951, and together they raised their four children. Helen loved her crafts, volunteer work, and her music singing with choirs. Her best loves were her lovely grandchildren, whom she adored. She loved to sew and during her life, she made clothes for her children and grandchildren, wedding dresses and christening gowns, and communion dresses. Her doll collection also adorns her work and she could make an ordinary doll into a princess. She was also talented with cakes and during the 1970s and early 80s she made many wedding cakes. She enjoyed her time with the Fifty-Plus clubs and the Red Hatters.
