HAZEL has passed away.
What’s in a name? Hazel who? Suddenly a name is all important! Family ties, relationships, character traits, memories…they are all bound to a name.
What’s in a name?
HAZEL ANN COLTART…suddenly a name makes the connection! Hazel was born on October 8th of 1936. She was the only child of Frances and Gordon Coltart and grew up in Lethbridge. She was “daddy’s girl” and some may have thought she was a bit pampered. She was also headstrong and when she, at the age of 17, told her parents she wanted to get married they told her to wait a couple of years. However, Hazel got her way and a new name.
HAZEL ANN HANSEN…a new name, a new status…“Mrs.!” On June 11,1954 she married Donald Hansen. They made a home in Lethbridge and had 3 children…Debra in 1956, Donald in 1957 and Douglas in 1964. Hazel went from “stay at home Mom” to daycare Mom and then to pharmacy assistant and later bookkeeper. Life was not meant to be easy for them. Complications of Don’s diabetes resulted in his loss of sight in 1968. Hazel became his eyes…reading textbooks for him and driving him to university while he tried to create a new life. New complications developed and Don passed away in December of 1971.
What’s in a name?
HAZEL ANN RENFROW…a new name, a new relationship. After Don’s death, Hazel met Ron Renfrow of Coaldale. They married on March 11, 1977. They created a life together with a love for the great outdoors. They were enthusiastic campers and made many friends on their outings to Lundbreck, St. Mary’s, Wasa Lake and many other camping areas. After Ron had a stroke, they were forced to give up camping but still enjoyed nature in the surroundings of their home in Coaldale. Another stroke took it’s toll and Ron passed away in September of 2008. Hazel moved to Lethbridge after Ron’s death.
Legacy of a name?
HAZEL’s family…Hazel has left a legacy that made her very proud. Debbie and Svend have a wonderful life in Denmark and have raised a family of Doctors and teachers, and been graced with 3 grandchildren of their own. Don and Donna relocated to Calgary in 1987 and have 2 sons, a lawyer and an accountant. Doug has served faithfully in the Public Service for more than 20 years and has a terrific life in Toronto, enjoying his fishing trips and precious time with his friends. We are happy to get together whenever we get a chance and will miss mom every time we meet or talk.
The weight loss we all thought to be caused by her grieving turned out to be cancer and now all we have are memories connected to the name…HAZEL. We are grateful that she suffered for only a short time, and that her family and best friend Kari were able to be close and comforting to her in her final time with us.
In loving memory of our mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother…
