DEREK HANSON passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 18, 2020 in Coaldale Health Centre.
He was born February 24, 1928 in Yorkshire, England, the oldest of four children. He became a radiographer in 1946 and worked in X-ray in Menston Hospital where he met the love of his life, Noreen Armitage. They shared a wonderful love and marriage for over 71 years.
Derek immigrated with his wife and three children to Canada in 1966 and worked at the University Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. He moved to Red Deer the following year and spent the next 14 years as the Director & Tutor of the X-ray Department at Red Deer Regional Hospital. In 1981, Derek moved to Lethbridge where he finished out his career as Manager of X-ray at St. Michael's Hospital. After his retirement in 1993, Derek and Noreen lived in Spruce Grove, Prince Rupert, and Campbell River before returning to Lethbridge in 1998. Derek loved his career in X-ray and was known for his tall stature, keen intelligence and dry sense of humour. He was an avid curler and golfer and enjoyed photography. Derek was such a gentleman and was so kind and compassionate. He treated others equally, with respect and without judgement, setting a high standard and good example for his children.
He leaves behind his loving wife Noreen, son Nigel Hanson (Gerry), devoted daughters Wendy Nero (Jerry) and Andrea Wallace (Randy). He also leaves grandchildren Sean Hanson, Brett Hanson, Brittany Bastian, Noelle Hughes-Meier, Megan Johnston, and Russell Wallace, along with six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was predeceased by his parents, infant sister June, younger sister Cynthia, and little brother Malcolm.
Derek was a remarkable man with a kind heart, quick wit and strong love for his wife and family. He will be missed but remembered always in our hearts.
Special thanks to Dr. Mueller, and the wonderful staff at the Coaldale Health Centre. The family will be forever grateful for the kindness and caring shown to Derek, and for the love that was shown to both him and the rest of the family with daily phone calls, garden visits and finally in person visits during the past five months. Thank you for being his family when visitors weren't allowed to be there.
