Just one day shy of her 92nd birthday mom passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Miggs was born in Cereal, Alberta, where she spent her early years before moving to Calgary at age 9.
Growing up, Miggs was very involved with Central United Church in Calgary and often remarked that she had been very close to choosing the ministry as her calling. As a young woman, Miggs worked at the Hudson’s Bay Company in downtown Calgary in the credit department and ran a bookkeeping machine. Miggs remembered well when the first escalator was installed at the store. In 1945, Miggs met J.R. through Molly, his sister, and they were married on December 18, 1946. They moved to Lethbridge in 1954 where they raised two sets of twins: Jerry (Eleanor), Jim (Brenda), Jane (Bill), and Joan (Roger). As Dad began coaching baseball and hockey in Lethbridge, Miggs became the cheerleader and her love of baseball was born. Her passion rivaled J.R.’s and for many years they travelled to Arizona in winters to watch “spring training.” In 2008, with her granddaughter Jamie as escort, Miggs took her last trip to the baseball park; she went to Florida to watch her beloved Blue Jays.
Miggs worked for the Canadian Cancer Society in Lethbridge from 1964 to 1984 and had a distinguished career. After retiring, Miggs and JR travelled as often as they could and as far as they could. Miggs had a passion for life and was always there to help others. Miggs also served on the Board of Governors of the Lethbridge Community College from 1972 - 1978. Miggs was involved with Progressive Conservative Party for many, many years and received the Jacques Cartier Award in 1985 from Brian Mulroney for her long term service.
Miggs and JR have seven grandchildren: Marga (Garry), Rob (Rebecca), Aaron (Maria), Cayley (Jason), Justin (Nikki), Jamie (JP) and Paige. Miggs also has seven great-grandchildren: Cole, Keenan, Kara, Alex, Ethan, Davis and Kayden.
She is predeceased by her husband JR in 2001, grandson Ryan in 1991, and brothers Jack and Steve.
Many thanks to the staff at Fairmont Extendicare and to her friend Dawn for the wonderful care given in her last days.
A Memorial Service will be held at McKillop United Church (2329-15 Avenue South, Lethbridge) on Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at a later date.
