Doug is survived by his mother Laurie, sister Amanda Kerslake and her children Taylor Kuhrinen (Torin) & Arlo and Taryn & Caden, brothers Brad and his children Cordell, Jaeden, Joely, Bradley & Tiegen and Tom (Kelsey) and their children Karly & Michael, and by his very special friend Jackie Stowell.
He was predeceased by his sister Elmira in 2004, and his grandparents Ralph and Ena Bechtel from Lethbridge.
Douglas was born in Lethbridge and spent most of his life living on the northside. As a passenger in a motor vehicle accident in 1998, he suffered a severe head injury and spent several months in hospital. Given only a 5% chance of survival, he beat the odds; however, he always felt that they should not have saved him. Eventually he concluded that he was here to make us laugh and that he did for many years. His oldest sister was his best friend and after her passing, things took a downturn, eventually leading him into addictions. In 2012, Doug met his next best friend Nayla, a dog we had rescued. He spent a great deal of time with her and considered her his best friend. He would often tell me that she was brought into his life to teach him and her both how to love again. Christmas Eve we lost the house to a fire and Doug made sure that his mother got out. Not surprising as Doug often put others before himself. Doug will be fondly remembered for his kind nature and his sense of humour.
We will be forever grateful for the crucial impact that Jackie had on his life and grateful that she was with him when he passed suddenly from a medical condition.
There will be no funeral at Doug's request.
