Grant (Sonny Boy) was born at the Blood Indian Hospital on September 28th, 1954. At two years of age, the little blond curly-haired boy was adopted in the traditional way by his Grandmother Louise. He was raised on the Kainaiwa Blood Reserve where he attended St. Paul’s Anglican Residential School, Cardston Elementary, and Cardston Jr. High. Grant excelled in all kinds of sports, especially hockey and fastball, and played with various teams within these communities. During his hockey days, Grant played with where he went on to become a Treaty 7 Minor Hockey champ in . Grant never missed out on school activities, thanks to his determined and supportive Grandma Louise. In Jr. High, Grant was very fortunate to have gone on a trip overseas to England and France thanks to his Grandma who raised enough funds to ensure he never missed out on the chance of a lifetime. During his trip, Grant was blessed to have met and kiss the ring of Pope John Paul VI. For years to come, these amazing experiences and endeavors would spark the great stories he would love to tell his children, grandchildren, family and friends. There truly was never a dull moment when it came to the tales of his “hockey days” and remarkable expeditions around the world. Grant resided in Lethbridge for most of his life, having worked for his cousin Stu Healy in basement construction which then led to working with Lethbridge Basement Ltd. for many years. When he wasn’t working, Grant enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, watching his favorite sports, and most of all taking care of his wife Rita. Grant always made it known that his greatest goal was to make her happy and he took immense pride in working hard for “his honey”. Grant was a kind, easygoing and generous man with a humorous nature, he was someone you can joke and fool around with and if you happen to hit the truth on anything about his behaviors he would just laugh and say “Jaa”. Grant truly was a friend to everyone. He will forever remain in our hearts and will be sadly missed all that knew him. Kita’kitamaatsin (until we meet again).
