MONICA ANNE GRAINGER, beloved wife of the late Alfred Grainger, passed away peacefully at the Cedar Creek Adaptacare with family at her side on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the age of 85 years.
MONICA ANNE GRAINGER, beloved wife of the late Alfred Grainger, passed away peacefully at the Cedar Creek Adaptacare with family at her side on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the age of 85 years.
Monica will be lovingly remembered by Louise (Larry) McMahon of Taber, AB, Margot (Craig) Chantler of Kimberley, BC, Susan (Vern) Boldick of Wetaskiwin, AB, John (Sherry) Grainger of Saskatoon, SK, and Jane (Paul) Crawford of Calgary, AB. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brother Richard and sister Julie.
Monica was born March 29, 1935 at Blairmore AB. At 17 she attended University of Western Ontario. In 1953 Monica and Al married in Calgary. She then completed her ARCT in piano pedagogy. While raising her family she returned to the University of Calgary and graduated with a Bachelor of Music in 1977. Monica was a well-respected piano and advanced music theory teacher. She was an associate branch teacher with the Mount Royal College conservatory of music. Monica was an organist and choir director at various churches in Calgary.
Monica filled her days enjoying hiking, golfing, cross-country skiing. She also was an active volunteer with many local charities. Upon retirement Monica and Al wintered in Arizona and spent summers at their cottage at Hidden Valley Golf Resort. Grandchildren spent summers with Nana at the cottage creating a lifetime of memories and life lessons.
Monica and Al moved to Lethbridge in 2007. Monica was a devout Catholic throughout her life.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cedar Creek Adaptacare for their compassionate care.
A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 - 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. BASIL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604 - 13 Street North, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, September 25, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Kevin Tumback celebrating.
Following the Mass, Monica will be laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery.

I was thinking about Monica today. She used to hire me to play the trumpet at the church where she was the organist, and I have fond memories of those events. I'm sorry to hear of her passing.
We were very sorry to hear of Monica's passing. We remember the good times we had with her and Al playing bridge etc. Monica taught our two boys history and harmony. She was a wonderful teacher and a wonderful person.
Our deepest sympathy to all of Monica's extended family in your time of sorrow. Our families have shared many good times and sad times over the years. I remember with fondness both Al and Monica.. I was their paperboy years ago in Calgary at Holy Name Parish. It was wonderful to reconnect with them when they moved to Lethbridge. . I will remember them both at my mass in the coming days.
My condolences to the Grainger Family. We enjoyed many good times together at the Hidden Valley Golf Resort years ago. My husband Stan worked with Al Grainger in the oil patch and we introduced them to the cabin life. Monica played the organ at Stan's funeral in 1995 and I've never forgotten her energy and kindness. Dear Lou, Margot, Susan, John and Jane, My deepest condolences to you and all your family. I met your mom through music, as a student teacher, and then as a member of our special group Morning Musicale. I admired her greatly as one who accomplished a great deal in her life and shared her talents generously. My very first international travel was spent with your mom and another teacher on a trip to a music conference in England. We spent another few weeks there together exploring the UK, and it was an unforgettable and wonderful time. I also enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with her as part of that group.
