Gibson, George

June 4, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of GEORGE MELVILLE GIBSON on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at the age of 84 years. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Legacy Lodge after a long battle with dementia. George will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

Born in 1940 in Kingston, Ontario, he came West with his parents and most of the family and settled in the Calgary area. His interests in sports started at an early age where he participated in numerous sporting endeavors, which included football, baseball, hockey and curling. It was because of his interests in these sports he was able to make lifelong friends along the way.

He did all his schooling in Calgary and eventually met his future wife Val while he was attending Queen Elizabeth High School and would go on to marry the love of his life in 1961. Soon after their family started to grow with the birth of their first son Brent in 1961, followed by Jodi in 1962 and their family was complete when second son Michael was born in 1964.

One of George’s first jobs was working at Calgary Motor Products where he worked in shipping and receiving. He quickly advanced and went on to work at Jack Carter’s, eventually landing at General Motors. After a few years at GM in Calgary and with the encouragement of his boss at the time, he applied for the Parts Managers position in 1974 at Enerson Motors (now Davis Pontiac) in Lethbridge, Alberta and was successful in getting the position. So, the family moved from Calgary and have called Lethbridge home ever since! It was through working for the General Motors organization, that George and Valerie were fortunate enough to be a part of many work-sponsored travel trips throughout the years that allowed them to create lifelong memories.

George is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years; Valerie, Brent and Sheila Gibson (Kirsti and Dwight, Jillian, Hayley), Jodi and Peter Brizinello (Justin), Mike and Carol Gibson (Jordan and Janelle, Adam), along with three great-grandchildren: Natalie, Cameron and Wyatt. One of his greatest joys in life was attending his grandchildren’s musical recitals, concerts, birthdays and sporting events.

Rest peacefully now and keep cheering on your two favorite Calgary teams, the Stampeders and the Flames from above!

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Legacy Lodge for their excellent care and compassion in caring for George.

As per George’s request, there will be no funeral. The family will have a private celebration of George’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to donate to the Lethbridge Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choosing.
