On May 18th, John William Frouws died suddenly in his greenhouse while he was tenderly nurturing his 200 bedding out plants. When he was an infant, his family emigrated from Holland to Southern Alberta. As a young boy he loved to go camping at Alexander Wilderness Park on weekends. John met his beloved Irene when he was a teenager working for the City Parks Department. They married in 1943, while he was on a military leave. During the war years, he served in the Royal Canadian Engineers and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1947, John resumed working for the City of Lethbridge, now as a streetcar and bus driver. In 1962, he was promoted to Transit Superintendent - completing 38 years of City service at retirement in 1976. John and Irene were avid gardeners. For five consecutive years they won Canada’s Best Veterans’ Vegetable and Flower Garden Trophy. They were also volunteer Sunday school teachers at Southminster United Church for several years. After retirement, John and Irene spent many enjoyable hours babysitting, gardening, and picking Saskatoon berries in the coulees. John devoted his life to God, family, friends, and community - donating generously to various local and overseas organizations. He is survived by his daughter, Carol, his sister, Gertrude, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene, daughter, Diane, and his siblings: Alice, Tina, Harry, and Jim. A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Major Glen Habkirk officiating.
