Fred George Fraser Cartwright passed away at the age of 80 years at St. Michael’s Health Care Centre on April 21 2009. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Audrey (Harris), three children Deb Cartwright, Walter Scott Cartwright and Tami Cartwright and one granddaughter Emily Cartwright. He was predeceased by his parents George and Edna Cartwright, his brother Mac Cartwright and sister Helen Spielman. Fred was born in Granum Alberta on October 11 1928. He began his teaching career in 1949 in Champion Alberta where he taught elementary and junior high school. As his career progressed he moved into the field of special education and was the Superintendent of the Alberta School for the Deaf from 1967-1973 and the Director of People Personnel Services for the Lethbridge School District 51 from 1973-1977. After leaving the school board he established the Rehabilitation Services Program for rehab aides at the Lethbridge College. He retired in 1983 but went on to teach sessional classes at the University of Lethbridge and served on the University Senate. In his retirement years Fred enjoyed his garden and woodworking. He loved the family cats and created a garden that was neighbourhood friendly because it kept the cats happily contained. His yard was also a haven for local birds with bird feeders in cat proof locations. In the last few years he attended the St. Michael’s Bridges Program where he felt like a friend as well as a client. Cremation. A Memorial Service will be held at MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329- 15 Avenue South, Lethbridge on Monday, April 27, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Cathy Coates officiating. A private family graveside service will be held in Archmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St. Michael’s Health Care Centre Bridges Program (#207 200 4 Avenue South Lethbridge Alberta T1J 4C9) or to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Team and the staff of the St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit for their kind professional and loving care.
