She will be deeply missed by her children: Joe (Marilyn), Bernie, Jim, Ron (Mary), and Kelly; stepson, Arthur; and grandchildren: Andrew, Polly, Will, Dylan, and Lori.
Enid was predeceased by her loving husband, Cyril, in 1977; her parents, Joseph and Mary Schuster; her sisters, Iona Meyer and Adele Graff; her brother, Alan Schuster; her son, Norman; stepchildren, Gary and Mary; daughter-in-law, Janis Kyle; and grandson, Kevin.
Born in Cupar, Saskatchewan, in 1929, Enid’s early life was shaped by the Great Depression. She grew up in Dysart, Saskatchewan, and after graduating high school, moved to Regina to work in the mail-order department of The Robert Simpson Company. A few years later, she relocated to Kelowna to work for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, where she discovered a passion for banking and serving others. In 1953, Enid transferred to a bank in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where her parents resided. There, she met Cyril, a railroad engineer and widower with three children (Arthur, Mary, and Gary), and they married in 1956. The following year, they settled in Lethbridge, a city Enid loved and called home for the rest of her life. In her later years, as her health declined, she returned to Regina to be closer to family.
Enid was tirelessly devoted to her family and community. After Cyril’s passing, she returned to banking while single-handedly raising her family. Yet, she still found time and energy for hobbies and volunteering. A remarkable cook and gracious hostess, her home was the heart of countless holiday gatherings for her extended family; there was always room for one more at her table. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and was an avid bowler. Enid also took classes at the community college, excelling in everything she undertook.
For over 60 years, Enid generously dedicated her time to the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), serving as a member and multiple-term president. She also volunteered with the Lethbridge Interfaith Food Bank, served as a Captain with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and fundraised for numerous other charities.
Enid was an exceptional mother (and a second mother to many) and a cherished friend to all. She was incredibly proud, supportive, and encouraging of her children and grandchildren, never forgetting a birthday or anniversary. She relished opportunities to visit family and travel with them. A highlight of her life was a trip from Vancouver to Calgary on the Rocky Mountaineer train as part of her 90th birthday celebration. Other cherished memories included trips to New York, where she witnessed Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Enid was a force of nature who lived a full and vibrant life, leaving a legacy of wonderful memories for all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. with a reception to follow in the church hall.
