She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Mihály “Mike” Stefancsik (1936); her children: Mike (Trisha), Edie (Steve), and Steve (Sophie); as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was born on August 26, 1938, in Center, Hungary to Nagy József and Késmarky Anna. She had three sisters, Jolanka (1932-2001), Anna (Anci) (1934-2016) and Marika (1945 - Present).
She met the love of her life, Mike in 1953, when he was working in a factory with her mother. In 1956, the Hungarian Revolution forced Mike and Edie to leave their homes, or risk being sent to a prison camp in Siberia. Mike promised Edie that if she met him at the train station, they could get married when they got to Austria. She was already at the train station when Mike arrived the next morning.
Together they escaped to Austria, walking through the snow and cold to find and fight for a better life together. They were married on February 9, 1957, at St. Joseph’s Church in St. Pölten, Austria. They made their first home together in the small community of East Coulee, Alberta, where Mike would spend winters working in the coal mines and summers on the railroad.
In 1958, they moved to Iron Springs, where they would make their home for the next 33 years. Edie worked hard in the sugar beet fields for fourteen years, and in 1970 they purchased a quarter section of land, where so much love was shared.
Some of her greatest memories were spending summers raising her grandchildren on that same family farm.
Edie was an avid gardener, baker, and cook, winning many awards in garden competitions, including the Alberta Horticultural Society. Her favourite dish to make was Lecso, a Hungarian tomato, pepper, and onion stew, and nobody made a better poppy seed roll.
They moved to Lethbridge in 1993, where she tended to her special bonsai trees, and could always be found by Mike’s side in the garden, tending to her little patch of earth.
Edie lived her life full of love and life and will be missed all the more for it.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Blvd. West, Lethbridge, AB, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. with Father William Monis celebrating.
A private Interment will be held at a later date.
