Born in Köln, Germany in 1929, Edith came to Canada in 1958 where she joined her husband Edward, who was studying at UBC in Vancouver, BC. They enjoyed living by the coast for a few years and welcomed their son, Ralph. Innisfail, Alberta was their next stop, where Edith happily settled into raising a family, which included the birth of their daughter, Inga. Lethbridge soon became their permanent home, where they settled into a house on the south side. Edith enjoyed so many activities with the children, from skiing, to bowling, and happily welcomed their third child – daughter Karen into the busy Smulders family.
Edith loved her family and being involved in the community – she was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 25 years, bowled with the local league – bringing many prizes home, active in her church, and the 702 Wing League, but most of all, she was happily involved in keeping her kids in sports and dance activities – with many camping and skiing trips on the weekends. She skied and swam many lengths well into her late 70s.
Family meant everything to our Oma. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Karen (Chris) and Inga (Bruce); and her grandchildren: Kaylee (Curtis), Courtney (Kevin), Karissa (Scott), Rory (Meagan), and Maxton (Hayley); and great grandchildren, Raylee and Hayes.
Edith was preceded by her husband, Edward in 2023 and her son Ralph in 2021.
Edith’s opinion was very respected by her family and friends, and she often gave loving advice to family matters. Edith held strong to her Catholic faith, and her dedication to her family and friends will long be remembered.
Thank you to Cedar Creek Adaptacare and their caring staff.
Oma will be deeply missed by all those she knew and loved in her lifetime.
