DR. DONALD ARTHUR RICE, passed away at St. Therese Villa on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the age of 87 years. Donald was predeceased by his loving wife Ruth of 56 years. He is survived by his children Bob (Mieke) Rice of Lethbridge, AB; George Rice of London, ON; and Nancy (Jim) Noiles of Nelson, BC; his precious grandchildren: Michael, Jason (Jasmine), Alan (Lindsay Calder) and Tyler Rice (Catherine Sarter) and Kristin and Kathryn Noiles. He is also survived by his brother Ed (Angie) Rice of Lethbridge, AB; two sisters, Mary (Alan) Gray of Victoria, BC and Nancy O’Connor of California, as well as numerous special nephews and nieces. Donald was born in Lethbridge, AB, on May 4, 1921. He attended school at St. Joseph’s in Lethbridge, graduating when he was 16 years old. He had his own baseball team, which he acquired by saving funds to buy the bats and bases. Donald excelled at the University of Alberta, socially (President of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity) and academically, graduating with a degree in Medicine in 1945. His medical school classmates referred to Donald as the brilliant one. He started his medical practice in Taber, then relocated to Lethbridge where he became a partner with the Roy Clinic. Donald also started the Lethbridge Cancer Clinic and was the medical director for 42 years. He was a gifted surgeon, a highly respected family Doctor, and a legend to all those who entered his life. Donald had a fierce competitive nature and was driven to excel at everything he did. He was an active member and past president of the Lethbridge Country Club and was also an avid skier well into his senior years. A man of few words, he was extremely well read and was a walking encyclopedia with a wealth of knowledge. Donald’s passion in life was his family and in particular his grandchildren of whom he was so proud. He was a compassionate caregiver throughout his life and dedicated himself to supporting family and friends. A Celebration of Donald’s life will take place at the LETHBRIDGE COUNTRY CLUB, 101 Country Club Road South, on Saturday, October 25th, 2008, from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
