Doris Revina Oliver (Broadhurst), adored wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away Aug. 1, 2012 at age 81 after a life filled with love and kindness.
Born in Saskatchewan on Jan.23, 1931, Doris moved as a child with her family to Kimberley, B.C. where she attended school and where she later met her future husband Golden (Goldy) Oliver. She and Goldy moved to Lethbridge to start a family and a family business (Central Electric) where Doris worked until her retirement.
When she wasn’t working or spending time with family, Doris kept busy with the Alberta Social Credit Party, with the Lethbridge Auxiliary Hospital where she volunteered and at the Lethbridge Country Club where she proved you don’t have to be big to hit the ball straight. She was also an accomplished gardener, tomato and raspberry grower and a great fan of old movies with an encyclopedic knowledge of actors and actresses.
In later years, she demonstrated great courage and humour despite physical struggles, accepting whatever came with remarkable grace. Her strength of mind made her inspirational to many she encountered.
Doris is survived by son Brian (Sharon) Oliver, daughter Lynda (D’Arcy) Kavanagh; grandchildren Rhonda (Cheech) Cioffi, Renae (Dave) Kapala, Jason Varzari, Andrea Varzari (Tim Lyczewski), Keely (Rick) Semenuik; great granddaughter Alexis Cioffi; nieces and nephews; and four granddogs. (Doris was a lifelong dog lover/dogsitter and all the dogs thought she was just a big cookie.) Doris was predeceased by husband Goldy, her mother, father, three brothers and a sister. A Celebration of Doris’ Life will be held on Tuesday, August 7th At CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South at 1:00 PM
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to THE HUMANE SOCIETY (SPCA), 2920-16 Avenue North, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1H 5E9
